When you’re a personal trainer and Bo Derek is your first client, you know you’re going to have an impact in the fitness world.

Steven Kates was the Executive Director of the fitness company Nautilus in 1978, when Derek walked in with her husband, John. 

“John said, ‘My wife is going to run on the beach in Mexico for a movie, I want her to have muscles and I want you to be her trainer.’ 

Bo was already perfect, but I gave her some muscle.  She went on The Johnny Carson Show and said she was lifting weights at the Nautilus center in Brentwood, and that was it. There were lines around the block.”
